In the picture above, look at each individual closely between the females and the males. The main important thing about this picture is if these people walked in your retail store which one would you help first according to the non verbal communication vibes they are giving off. The lady to the far right seems to be dressed very professional does that mean you would be willing to help her first before you help the lady that dressed casually. By looking at both women that are both giving off non verbal communication signals but one seems interested in needing help and the other one doesn't. Also take a quick look at the guys. The one in the middle seems to be dressed very professional as well but if he walked in at the same time as the guy with that heads phones on who would you help first. By taking a look at both the guys and the girls, they are all giving off non verbal communication but which people are giving off a strong or light vibe of non verbal communication.
If you have ever seen the movie Pretty Woman than you are very familiar with the above scene. While there was a lot of direct verbal language telling her she was not welcome, watch the clip again and see what nonverbal signs were given by the retail workers and Julia Roberts.
What can you pick up? Here is some of what I found: -Upon entering the store, the facial expressions of the workers were pure shock and judgement - how could someone wearing that walk into a high end store?! - Tone of voice: the workers had a harsh, cold tone - extremely unwelcoming - Body language: crossed arms, hands behind back, and looking Julia Roberts up and down. Clearly they were NOT going to help her regardless of any money she had to spend. The nonverbal language in this clip helps elaborate the disdain of the retail workers and their disapproval of her. No one wants to be "pretty womaned" by retail workers when they are out shopping. Nonverbal cues are extremely important in retail settings, they can make customers feel welcomed, comfortable, relaxed, or the complete opposite. Sometimes, making a sale can depend on how you welcome your customer with language other than your words. Pick up any other nonverbal cues? Comment below! People in the world today, all spend their hard earn money where they want to. We all buy certain clothes from different stores, like malls, Macy's, and Ross just to name a few. We constantly judge the retailers employees by the way they dress, or look. On the other hand, have you ever notice we judge clothing stores by how clean and organized they are? For instance, if you're walking in the mall and looking for a shirt and the first store you saw looked like the picture on the bottom left. Without even speaking to an employee you can tell this store is not organized or clean so you look else where. If you look at the picture to the bottom right, that store seem very clean and easier for you to look for that shirt.
With that being said when your entering a clothing store. By the look, organization, and cleanliness alone, would you be happy to shop in all these stores or would you rather shop in only two of them? |
